Mistress of darkness’, opens with a homosexual relationship of almost 20 years
Elvira comes out of the darkness of the closet.
Cassandra Peterson, actress known worldwide as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, opens up about her 19-year romantic relationship with a woman.
On Tuesday, the 70-year-old Gothic goddess released her autobiography, “Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark,” in which she reveals “her full story, filled with intimate bombshells,” according to the publisher.
Peterson writes that she survived a severe burn injury when she was only 18 months old; leaving home in Manhattan, Kan., at age 14; and performing in Las Vegas just three years later.
This year, Peterson is celebrating the 40th birthday of Elvira, the beloved character of the horror hostess who turned her into an international icon.
But there is one important detail of her life that the unmistakable Halloween Queen is only now revealing. For the past 19 years, Peterson has been in a relationship with another woman, his former personal trainer, whom she calls “T”.
“Keeping a secret doesn’t do any good,” Peterson told The Orange County Register, speaking of finally opening up to his sexuality.
“I’m glad to have him there,” she continued. “I mean, it worries me. I have times when I’m like “Maybe people won’t like me anymore” and “Maybe I won’t have a job anymore”. It’s ridiculous to think that, but I have friends who are gay and have come out of the closet and it has affected their work, their relationships and their lives. It is therefore no exaggeration to worry. But on the other hand, it’s so exhausting to keep it a secret. It’s not good for you, it’s not good for us. It absorbs energy from you.
According to The Advocate, Peterson writes in the book that the two women met at a Gold’s Gym in Hollywood and started out as friends.
“A lot of times when I was doing my pre-workout warm-up on the treadmill, I couldn’t help but notice one particular trainer – tanned, tattooed and muscular – walking on the gym floor with a knit cap pulled up. so low on her long brown hair it almost covered her eyes, ”she wrote. “Dark and brooding, he gave off such intense energy that when he walked through the huge gymnasium floor, the waters parted and people stopped in their tracks to watch.”
It wasn’t until Peterson and T saw each other in the ladies’ bathroom that she realized her “bad boy” was really a “bad girl”.
Peterson, who only got involved with T after ending her 25-year marriage to her manager Mark Pierson, said their relationship began to change on a rainy night when T arrived at her house, ago nearly two decades.
“There on the doorstep stood my coach, T, holding a trash bag full of his things, looking sad and scruffy. She had separated from her longtime partner, had spent time in rehab, and had nowhere to go.
The two began to live together, and one night, after they went to the movies, Peterson felt a surprising desire to kiss T.
“I think I was even more surprised. What the hell am I doing? I had never been interested in women other than friends. I felt so confused. It just wasn’t me! I was amazed that I had been friends with her for so many years and never noticed our chemistry, ”she writes in the book. “I soon found out that we hook up sexually in ways that I had never known before.”
Today, after being together for over 19 years, Peterson says that for the first time in her life, she is with someone who makes her feel “safe, blessed and truly loved.”
“Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark”, published by Hachette Books, is now available.
