Men’s soccer moves to 4-0 after strong performance against Sarah Lawrence
JERSEY CITY, NJ – The University of New Jersey City men’s football team continued their undefeated streak at the start of the season today, Wednesday, September 8, as the Gothic Knights knocked down another Skyline Conference foe at Sarah Lawrence College . NJCU beat the Gryphons 2-0 in the Friendly Limits of the Thomas M. Gerrity Sports Complex at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Ground.
At the start of the game, the Gothic Knights (4-0) had a few chances but could not touch the net against Sarah Lawrence (1-2). The game’s first real chance came in the sixth minute when NJCU fouled inside the box and received a penalty. Second year midfielder Thiago Duarte (Newark, NJ / Newark East Side) aimed for the lower right corner of the net, but the Gryphons goaltender guessed correctly and stopped the shot. The rebound went straight to Duarte, who sounded his next attempt off the crossbar and got out. The match went scoreless.
Minutes later in the ninth, the second-year forward Gabe Cruz (Colonia, NJ / Colonia) stole the ball and played it across the attacking zone to midfield, about 30 yards away. From there, comrade before, freshman Jeff Sanchez (Carteret, NJ / Carteret), snatched one in the upper right corner above the keeper’s head and made it 1-0 with his first career goal.
In the 25th minute, Sanchez briefly left the game with an injury – he would return later in the game – and in his sophomore year Jorkaef Fallas (North Bergen, NJ / Hudson Catholic) came to replace it. Less than a minute later, after a scrum in front after a corner kick from the Gothic Knights, Fallas picked up a turnover 10 yards from the top center of the box and sent one over the top of the box. goalie header and behind the net to make it 2-0. – Overall, NJCU topped Sarah Lawrence 20-3, including 6-0 in shots on goal, en route to the 2-0 victory.
– Cruz, Sanchez and Duarte led all the players with three shots. Sanchez scored two goals, a game high.
The Gothic Knights return to the field this weekend for the Bryan Karl Tournament, hosted by Alfred University in Alfred, NY NJCU faces SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday, September 11 at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 12, Jersey City will face either Alfred or the College From Youville at 11:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m.
