Magnolia buys Mia Goth and Grace Van Patten Action Fantasy ‘Mayday’

Magnolia Pictures has acquired the worldwide rights to “Mayday,” a fantasy action film which debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

“Mayday” is directed by directorial director Karen Cinorre and stars Grace Van Patten, Mia Goth, Havana Rose Liu, Soko, Théodore Pellerin and Juliette Lewis. Magnolia plans to release the film in the fall.

In “Mayday”, Ana (Van Patten) finds herself transported to a dreamlike and dangerous coast. Once there, she joins a female army engaged in an endless war where women lure men to their deaths with radio signals, like 20th century sirens. Although Ana finds strength in this exhilarating world, she realizes that she is not the killer they want her to be.

“‘Mayday’ is an exciting and original film with a lot of going on,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “Karen Cinorre delivered something really unique.”

“I am delighted to partner with Magnolia Pictures as we launch ‘Mayday’ to the world,” Cinorre said. “They’ve been film visionaries from the start, and nothing is more satisfying right now than bringing a daring female ensemble to the screen with them.”

The film received largely positive reviews on its Sundance debut. Variety’s Peter Debruge compared the film to “Promising Young Woman” and “Assassination Nation” and wrote: marks a director to watch.

Cinorre also wrote the screenplay and produced the film. “Mayday” was produced by Jonah Disend, Lucas Joaquin, Sam Levy (who was also director of photography) and co-produced by Amanda Messenger. The film is presented by Queen’s Army and Complementary Colors in association with Secret Engine.

The deal was negotiated by Magnolia EVP Dori Begley and SVP of Acquisitions John Von Thaden, and by ICM Partners on behalf of the filmmakers. Lorna Lee Torres and Marie Zeniter of Magnolia will launch international sales in Cannes.
