Eastcastle Place plans to expand its East Side campus
Place du Château d’Est is planning an expansion that would add approximately 30 new apartments to its senior residency campus on the East Side of Milwaukee.
The plan includes the reconfiguration and consolidation of existing areas within the Eastcastle complex, located at the intersection of East Bradford and North Downer avenues, to create space for the new units.
The proposed addition – called Lake Drive Estates – would be built in the Watertower building in Eastcastle. It would be the third apartment “neighborhood” on campus, which includes its historic building, an adjacent contemporary building, and the Lake Drive Estates. Eastcastle offers independent living, supported living, memory care and skilled nursing care.
The campus includes its original 1892 Victorian Gothic building, designed by renowned Milwaukee architects Henry Koch and Herman Esser. The proposed addition would reflect the “historic charm and distinctiveness” of Eastcastle while providing modern amenities, the organization said.
Plans call for 17 two-bedroom apartments, 13 one-bedroom apartments, a bar and lounge, a renovated fitness center and multi-use spaces. The units will be independent apartments, subject to charge.
Eastcastle Place said the expansion will allow the non-profit organization to continue its mission while remaining competitive at a time when the assisted living and elderly care industry faces significant challenges, including low government reimbursement rates, a severe labor shortage and an expanding patient population.
“This allows us to stay true to our mission and vision by taking a longer-term, holistic approach to planning for the future, continuing to provide exceptional care, facilities and services to seniors,” said L ‘organization.
The plan is to relocate and consolidate assisted living, memory care and specialty nursing care into one area of campus – the Bradford Terrace building. The first, second and third floors of Bradford Terrace would be renovated and designated for assisted living, while the fourth floor would become a “memory support district”.
The campus health center would be “the right size” and moved to the fifth floor of the terrace, with 20 approved beds.
Construction is expected to begin around March 2022 and last up to 18 months. LCS Development will manage the project.
