CANSO – If you drive around the community of Canso, you will probably never see Robert Bond’s house, even though he lives on Main Street. Or you could say its driveway entrance is on Main Street, but the house is about 500 feet from the road and requires crossing a stream to get to it.

Recently retired Bond lives in his childhood home and has crossed this stream, crossing a wooden bridge, thousands of times. Weather and traffic have taken their toll on the structure which Bond says was built 55 years ago.

He said The newspaper last week that there had been repairs to the bridge over the years, but last year he knew it would have to be replaced soon.

” The ropes [loaded longitudinal beams] who crossed the bridge, they became bad; at any point you could have crossed and entered the creek, ”Bond said.

Due to the poor condition of the bridge, Bond and his wife were in danger in an emergency. No ambulance or fire truck could cross the bridge in an emergency “because it [emergency vehicle] was probably too heavy for the bridge, ”he explained.

This safety issue was brought to the attention of Steven Myatt of Striker Construction.

“There was a little controversy across the EMO (Emergency Management Office) about the dangerous bridge, so we took it in hand; between East Coast Hydraulics, Striker Construction and Verhagen Demolition, ”he said.

“It was a group effort. It was kind of my idea; we had a meeting one night at the fire department and realized we weren’t allowed to cross the bridge if there was a fire so it was a dangerous thing. I took it in hand to move forward with the project.

Before the offer for a new bridge was made, Bond said he was considering fixing it.

“I was looking for different options. I guess I’ll have to replace it with wood like what’s already there. When Steven mentioned that [the volunteer replacement], I jumped on it and said, ‘Sure I’m going to take a new bridge.’… I really enjoyed that.

Myatt told Bond, to his surprise, that the bridge would be free; free of charge for labor or materials.

The new bridge will make a big difference in Bond’s life and he said, “probably to whoever takes over [the homestead]. “

Myatt said of the volunteer effort: “I knew him [Bond] for years… He would never ask for anything. We took it upon ourselves to help him.

For three days, the three construction companies worked to remove the old bridge and install a new steel bridge in Bond Alley, completing the job on July 12.

Bond said of the construction: “They got the materials and Feltmate – East Coast Hydraulics – they welded the material and they brought it in and put it in the driveway; Steven and his team Earl Myatt and Laurie Keefe and Alex MacKenzie.

“East Coast Hydraulics donated their labor and welder to weld the bridge. I donated time, machinery, manpower, a dump truck and gravel. Verhagen donated steel for the bridge … [It was] a three day project from start to finish, ”Myatt said.

When asked why he and the volunteers who gathered had taken on this project, when contractors and materials were scarce and in high demand, Myatt added, “We are all extremely busy, but when it comes to safety I think we shouldn’t worry about the almighty dollar. It’s all about safety.

“He died before he got old. It was the title of the Village Voice announcing the drug-related death, at the age of 32, of Keith Moon, the original drummer of The Who. The title, of course, was a reference to the line sung by Roger Daltrey in the 1965 rock classic “My Generation” – “I Hope I Die Before I Grow Old”.

Over the years, many musicians – rock and others – have died too soon. A depressing number of them, including giants such as Charlie Parker, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin, have succumbed to drugs.

Many more have been killed in car or plane crashes, or have been killed by cancer, heart attack or other health problems. Some have committed suicide. (On a happier note, here are 35 rock stars who are now 75 or older.)

Some musicians, however, achieved their goals for reasons that were neither medical, accidental, nor voluntary: they were murdered.

Some of the biggest stars in music have been shot dead, including Sam Cooke, Selena, John Lennon and Marvin Gaye. Many rap and hip-hop luminaries have died this way as well, including legends like Tupac Shakur and Christopher Wallace (better known as The Notorious BIG) and, more recently, Nipsey Hussle and Pop Smoke. A 2015 Australian study actually calculated that just over half of the rap and hip-hop artists who died so far were homicide victims.

Click here to see 30 murdered musicians

However, violence knows no stylistic boundaries. When 24/7 Tempo compiled a list of musical personalities who had been murdered, the list included classical, jazz, reggae, Latin, heavy metal, R&B, country, folk, and more. The authors included jealous lovers, obsessed fans, and even family members. Any violent death is a tragedy, but these have robbed the world of great music and vibrant lives.

To build up its list of musicians who have experienced violent endings, 24/7 Tempo consulted “Musicians Killed by Guns: 1950 to the Present,” Published by Digital Music News in 2016, a vast catalog of some 79 musicians shootings, as well as shorter lists on sites including Simple soldier, JazzBlog, Fandom, and People, and details verified, to the extent possible, by contemporary obituaries in local and national publications. A final selection of musicians to be included was made partly on the basis of their fame or musical importance, but also with the aim of representing as many musical genres as possible. Only musicians who have been shot, stabbed or otherwise killed by another person were included; those who died by suicide or in accidents were not included.

Weekly Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7dIqIbPP6oab6YzuGDORF8

Jacob’s Choices

  1. Kacy Hill – “Just to Say”
  2. Jarhead Fertilizer – “Life is a prison”
  3. Tyler, the creator, YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Ty Dolla $ ign – “WUSYANAME”
  4. Brain rot – “Excretion of mortality”

It’s a shame that more people haven’t discovered singer and songwriter Kacy Hill. Hill’s discography is chock-full of relevant lyrics and soundscapes that never fail to strike a listener’s sensitive chords. “Just To Say” is a dark, calming track that places the listener in a low-key music club with smoke in the air as Hill shows off her beautiful sung voice.

The brand of death metal that Jarhead Fertilizer brought up is simple and mean. Slow guitar riffs and toxic vocals make “Life is a Prison” ignorant and humiliating in a good, groovy way that gets your head moving.

The magic of spending quality time with that special someone in everyone’s life is perfectly translated into a song with Tyler, “WUSYANAME” from the creator. Recalling the big names in music in love language like Marvin Gaye, “WUSYANAME” shows the evolution of Tyler, The Creator as an artist. One of the best things about this track is YoungBoy’s remarkable verse. So far, YoungBoy’s career has not been out of the ordinary, but Tyler has managed to show YoungBoy’s potential with just one track.

Cerebral Rot has carved out a place for himself in underground death metal with tracks that reek of swamp decay. “Excretion of Mortality” takes this statement to another level as the band has managed to make their instrumentation even more vile and their vocals even more putrid.

Madelaine’s choices

  1. Steve Lacy – “Dark Red”
  2. MyKey – “Was that something I said”
  3. Cass McCombs – “Morning Star”
  4. CASTLEBEAT, Sonia Gadhia – “Telephone”

“Dark Red” is arguably the best song from alternative R&B artist Steve Lacy’s debut EP. The funky baseline throughout the song compliments Lacy’s soulful melody and incredible vocal range.

“Was It Something I Said” by alternative pop-rock artist MyKey, who has over 18 million streams on Spotify, begins with an instrumental intro that turns into lyrics about an eventful relationship. MyKey’s soft vocals and guitar give this song a dark feeling.

The fourth track from Cass McCombs’ seventh album is “Morning Star,” a song filled with quirky lyrics that allow the listener to visualize what McCombs is singing about. The guitar is smooth and McCombs’ relaxing voice slides throughout the song. This song is perfect to listen to on a rainy day.

“Telephone” by alternative independent artist CASTLEBEAT, featuring chamber pop artist Sonia Gadhia, sounds very dreamy. The vocals are light, breathy, and smooth, while the grunge-inspired guitar and instrumental track are a bit heavier.

Brandon’s Choices

  1. Domaine Weston – “Pears”
  2. Big Thief – “Shark Smile-Edit”
  3. Brian Fallon – “Vincent”
  4. Blis.- “Bad weather”

Describing themselves as “your aunt’s favorite boy group,” North Carolina’s Weston Estate went viral with their latest single “Pears”. The song exploded on social media after garnering 1.4 million views after posting a clip of the band’s acoustic performance. The track deserves the attention because it is a breathtaking listening with the harmonious voice of the group and the fluid production.

“Shark Smile-Edit” is a 2017 track by Brooklyn indie rock band Big Thief. The group takes inspiration from folk inspirations on this track with simplistic bouncy drums, warm acoustic rhythm guitar and vocalist Adrianne Lenker’s voice delivered with vibrato and twang. The final chorus of the track is the selling point because it is built with a strong and shimmering lead guitar.

The track “Vincent” is taken from “Local Honey”, the third studio album by New Jersey singer and songwriter Brian Fallon. Fallon, best known for being the frontman of American rock band The Gaslight Anthem, always offers a change of pace with his solo work. This album is no different as “Vincent” is a slow country-folk ballad that takes the point of view of a woman in an abusive relationship who seeks an escape, ultimately killing her attacker.

Atlanta indie rock band Blis. packs a powerful nostalgic punch in his track “Bad Weather”. The intro of the track is strangely reminiscent of Smashing Pumpkins’ 1979, with its washed out groove alternating hi-hat and tom drum. chorus with saturated guitar and belted voice.

The relaxation of rules in long-term care homes is appropriate given vaccination rates, according to the medical officer of health.

THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay’s medical officer of health welcomes the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in long-term care homes.

With strong vaccination rates among local LTC residents, Dr. Janet DeMille said the province’s lifting of restrictions on Friday was appropriate and would reduce barriers for residents and their loved ones.

The provincial government announced this week that it will remove testing requirements for fully vaccinated staff, caregivers and visitors who do not show symptoms of COVID-19.

Similar guidelines have also been given to retirement homes.

The change was made in consultation with Dr Kieran Moore, who succeeded Dr David Williams as Ontario’s chief medical officer of health last month, the government said.

It accompanies the easing of other restrictions on LTC homes as Ontario moves to step three of its plan to reopen. The province lifted restrictions on residents’ ability to take absences and off-site excursions, the number of visitors allowed, buffet and family-style meals, and activities like singing and dancing on Friday.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit continues to work with local homes to ensure all residents and staff are immunized, DeMille said.

However, she said vaccination rates in local homes, especially among residents, are high and warrant a relaxation of restrictions.

“There are many strict measures in place in long-term care homes and other homes for the aged,” she said. “They were quite restrictive and put up barriers, really.”

“I think it’s appropriate, especially when we see the immunization rates in these settings, that we can relax on some of the [measures], especially for people who have been fully vaccinated.

Some limitations remain.

Riverside Health Care, which operates homes in Rainy River, Emo and Fort Frances, has released updated guidelines reminding caregivers and visitors of the masking and distancing requirements.

One hour limits for visits are still in place, and proof of immunization status is required for those taking advantage of the new testing exemptions.

Caregivers who are not or partially vaccinated must provide a PCR test or negative rapid test within seven days to enter a home, while general visitors need a rapid test on the same day.

The temperature checks are also complete, but the screening questions remain in place.

Steve Lamos, founding drummer, percussionist and trumpeter of Illinois’ emo pillars, American football, has left the group.

Lamos announced his departure on American football social media pages, sharing a statement in which he attributed the decision to a change in his personal circumstances.

“After many years with American football, my life situation has changed. Unfortunately, I now have to leave the group, ”he wrote.

“I want to thank Mike, Holmes, Nate, Garzon and Cory; Amber, Cara and Butch; Jason, Jim and Todd; Matt, Darcie, Seth and everyone else at Polyvinyl; Atiba, Damien, Evan, SB, Sarah V, Dan, Sarah T, Meric, Logan and the many other amazing artists and people I have come to know through AF.

“I wish you all the best as the group moves on to its next phase. Finally, I would like to thank the AF fans: you have given me some really amazing experiences and some really amazing memories. I am deeply grateful.

Lamos has played with American football since its inception in 1997, founding the group alongside frontman Mike Kinsella and guitarist Steve Holmes. Together, they released an eponymous album in 1999 – which would go on to become one of the emo genre’s most iconic releases – before going their separate ways the following year.

The group reformed in 2014 with the addition of Kinsella’s cousin Nate on bass, releasing two more eponymous albums in 2016 and 2019.

NME gave this latest release, highlighted by Hayley Williams’ single “Uncomfortably Numb”, a four-star review. In it, writer Tom Connick hailed the eight-track LP as “a record that is both classic in intonation and forward-looking in intention.”

“As the edges of emo continue to unravel, nestled among hip-hop and electronics in the mainstream, American football remains the group best versed in its traditional sensibilities,” Connick continued. “No longer a bunch of nostalgic bangers, American football is back at the top of the pile.”

Last April, the group made waves for their headlining performance at a virtual festival held in Minecraft, and for their timely split-screen cover of “Stay Home” from 1999.

Runaway June’s Naomi Cooke is officially a married woman! Over the weekend (July 10-11), the singer married her fiancé, Martin Johnson, a musician who leads new wave pop-rock group Night Game as well as lead emo group Boys Like Girls.

Cooke and Johnson tied the knot in a small outdoor, ‘summer camp’ themed wedding, according to an article on the country star social media. A pair of snapshots from the event show the couple saying “yes” in a waterside setting, a group of their loved ones holding hands behind them.

“During the weekend, a small but [mighty] stronghold of friends and family held hands in a circle around us as we turned the page on a new chapter in life as husband and wife, ”Cooke wrote in the caption of his article. She then thanked all of the people and organizations who made the event possible, including Bald Mountain Camp Resort, where the festivities took place; photographer Brendan Coughlin; luxury wedding planning service Ninth + Everett and more.

“I am so touched by the talents, gifts, time, attention and energy that each person down to the last person so easily and [selflessly] gave us, not wanting anything in return except for our happiness, ”Cooke concluded. ” Thank you. We all love you so much. “

Cooke’s new husband too shared a post to celebrate the wedding, with a more succinct caption: “Mr + Mrs Johnson.” A long series of images show off some of the couple’s favorite moments from their wedding ceremony, including photos of the couple watching fireworks, sharing a dance, and boarding a small plane.

Emo, as a genre, has always favored young people, its themes of romantic angst and emotional isolation like catnip for the young and the restless.

Singaporean emo revivalists Terrible People were confronted with this reality on their journey. On their 2019 second album “Like Clean Air”, the band had abandoned the post-uni hedonism of their 2017 debut album “Smoking Man” and reluctantly accepted the responsibilities that come with a full-time job. The record sometimes played as a protest against the increasing complexity of their lives and the difficulty of balancing that with being in a band. After the album was released, original drummer Edison Neo stopped it.

Terrible People called their latest album “Home, In a Way” a missing piece in their discography: the one that should have been between their first two releases. Songs such as “Every Day” always deal with the struggle between their professional life and musical creation: “I forgot to sleep again / And I walked to work feeling nervous and gray / I collapsed in a chair at noon / And I closed my eyes hoping it was over soon”.

Unlike the previous album, Terrible People seems to have adapted better to this station of life. The last line of the song shows some determination to make it work: “A sound came through my head and it comforted me so I sang it out loud. “

The ‘Gone Now’ opener shines with a pop and melodic glow that wasn’t always present on their first two records. Its opening line “I was in hellish disarray / She sits so gracefully insteadPerfectly sums up a key genre trope – namely being in love with someone who is much less captivated by you – and suggests that Terrible People is not quite done exorcising the chaos of their youth. Themes of personal inadequacy also appear, but this time framed in the context of the non-exercise of moral convictions. On ‘Courage’, singer and guitarist Alif Zaini sings: “I’m going to wake up to the fact that I haven’t done anything right by people / It’s really a lack of courage from where I stand and see. “

Terrible People is completed by Hadi Lee (bass, vocals) and Joshua Loh (drummer), guitarist and songwriter Goh Koon How who left the band between albums. They said the difficulties balancing their work and their music when recording “Like Clean Air” resulted in some of these songs sounding incomplete and rushed.

Looks like they’ve sworn not to make the same mistakes again: not a note on “Home, In A Way” is lost. Everything contributes to flesh out the sound canvas of the disc. The group credits the newly acquired sonic consistency to producers Zhang Bo and Raphael Ong (the latter of indie group Sobs), who challenged the group to release a record that could appeal to a wider audience, not just an emo.

The results are sometimes astounding. At the height of the single ‘Derby’, the band attacked the section fiercely – but they still sounded tight and in control, with the production somehow managing to bottle the band’s sonic ferocity without compromising their contagious energy. More intimate, “Slow Blinking” might have played out like a symbolic acoustic ballad, but the layers of sonic textures bubbling just below the surface elevate it to something more meaningful instead – a fitting ending to a great record.

It’s probably no coincidence that Terrible People’s awareness of their pop potential coincided with their reconciling with their lives. It’s a much less anxious record than ‘Like Clean Air’. Fortunately, this didn’t come at the expense of their boundless vigor. Instead, “Home, In A Way” captures a band maturing and finding their place in music and in life.

The last time viewers and members of the Umbrella Academy see Lila, she uses a briefcase to escape to an unknown location and time. At this point, Lila is very angry with the Hargreeves family, as she finds out that her adoptive mother, the Handler (Kate Walsh), had Lila’s biological mother number five (Aidan Gallagher) murdered so she could control. Lila and her powers. Although she was originally introduced as the psychiatric patient and love interest of Diego (David Castañeda), Lila is proving to be far more important to Season 2 than viewers originally thought. And it could happen again in season 3.

Reddit user u / helvetica_licorne has a very interesting theory about Lila. They argue that, motivated by anger, Lila uses a briefcase to prevent the five Hargreeves children she knows from being born – which would explain why Ben, whom she doesn’t know, survives in this timeline. In this theory, it’s not that Sir Reginald deliberately chose different children – he just didn’t care that the people he met in 1963 never emerged, because he saw them as children anyway. disappointments.

One potential problem with this theory is that no one knows how or why the 43 children were born – with the possible exception of Sir Reginald, but probably not Lila. Their mothers were not pregnant at the start of the day, and their births were all very sudden, so Lila probably couldn’t stop the conception and birth of the five members of the Umbrella Academy. But she could have killed them when they were kids, which is pretty brutal – but then again, she was raised to be an assassin.

It looks like we’ll just have to wait and see what happens in Season 3 of “The Umbrella Academy”.

The story is the same for tens of millions of people in Southeast Asia, where vaccines are scarce and COVID-19 is rampant.

After more than a month of nationwide lockdown in Malaysia, the plight of the poor has spawned a white flag movement, with people placing them outside their homes to signal a need for food or other necessities.

In Cambodia, in the so-called COVID-19 red zones of Phnom Penh, low-income families were the hardest hit in April and May. Many went hungry because they were forbidden to leave their homes.

Vietnam’s largest cities, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, are also entering lockdown and another approach for Thailand, which is also being overrun with the Delta variant.

With low vaccination rates and high infections, governments have had little choice but to shut down to slow transmission, but it comes at a cost and it is the large informal sector that bears the brunt.

“They are the ones who are hit hard by the pandemic,” said Eko Listiyanto, a researcher at the Institute for Economic and Financial Development in Jakarta.

“Street vendors for example … now social restrictions [in Indonesia] limit the opening hours of restaurants, cafes and street food to 8 p.m. This creates more problems for some street food companies as some food and drink is not consumed until after sunset. “

Then there are the potential spillover effects, although not directly quantifiable, of economic insecurity.

In the Philippines, where hard closures have been a hallmark of the pandemic, particularly around Manila, a 57% increase in suicides from 2019 to 2020 was reported this week.

Malaysian police have also noted an increase in the number of people committing suicide – 468 from January to the end of May this year, up from 631 for all of 2020.

The desperation of many in Malaysia prompted tech entrepreneur Rezi Razali to launch a website and app this week to digitize the White Flag campaign, making it easier to connect those who need help and those who can help. .

When contacted, Razali said there were around 3,000 inquiries on the site. He said in many cases people have been offered help putting food on the table or paying rent, within 30 minutes of the request.

“From what I see from my data, the majority of the requests that we have seen are from urban areas, mainly Selangor and Kuala Lumpur,” he said. “The majority of them are unemployed, most of them blue collar workers. “

On the island, where more than half of the population lives, hospitals have been inundated due to the surge in infections over the past three weeks.

Even when the curbs were finally imposed last Saturday, before being widened on Wednesday, it was a reluctant decision.

Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said that a fortnight before the restrictions were put in place, Joko asked him to visit the poorest areas of Jakarta where two families share a bathroom.

“Health professionals are finding that the faster the lockdown, the better. For the middle class and above all, the faster the lockdown, the better, ”Sadikin said.

” But of [the] another perspective – if you see that there are a lot of people at the bottom of the pyramid – if you talk to the 60-70% of the population of Jakarta at the lowest level, they say to you, “Sir, we have to work for live ‘. “

Sadikin said comments were provided during the design of the measures.

“It’s not an ideal decision, but at least we have moved forward and made this decision,” he said.

Anti-mobility measures are due to end on July 20 but will almost inevitably be extended until infections subside, so the Indonesian government is preparing a social assistance program that will include 10 kilograms of rice for 20 million families.

But he hopes his city and country can contain the epidemic before too long and thus get rid of restrictions affecting his livelihood.
