Goodman told Insider that he only plans to paint the shingled roof black, but then vowed to apply the color palette throughout the home, with help from local contractors.

“While some might consider it dark, it’s not once inside, given all the natural light and overhead lighting,” Goodman told Insider, confirming that he was “absolutely not “a gothic.

“It is simply a unique peaceful property in my opinion,” he added.

The listing of properties describes the two-story home as a “mysterious black octagon-shaped house on a vast secluded 0.52 acre lot!”

The property was originally built in 1993, said Goodman, adding that he was keen to retain its unique shape and take advantage of its eccentricity.

He said the neighbors were initially taken aback by the makeover but for the most part they were positively shocked: “It definitely cleaned up the overall appeal and gave everyone something to say.”

The residence spans just over 1,500 square feet and is complemented by a three-car garage.

Goodman told Insider he thinks the secluded location and large garage add to the mystery of the house.

“From the side street all you can see is the three-car garage,” he said, recalling that passers-by don’t see enough of the house to understand what it is.

Inside the house, a black-and-white theme covers two bedrooms, two bathrooms, as well as an open-plan living and dining room with a spiral staircase, kitchen and utility room, Goodman said.

Its original design was quite “neutral and dated,” according to Goodman. It was based on a white and beige color scheme with brown for the sides and roof.

The property has lots of distinctive accents such as neon signs, a gas fireplace, French doors, laminate flooring, and an American kitchen with granite countertops.

Goodman told Insider that since the announcement was published, the house has garnered a lot of interest around the world thanks to its unique appearance.

He said: “Too many houses are the same – why not stand out or be different?”

The listing adds that the upper floor is equipped with a private tiled bathroom with “double sinks” as well as a tiled walk-in shower.

“Sleek, sexy, and undeniably unique is this Midwestern spectacle,” the listing reads.

Goodman said there are plenty of windows in the house, along with gray and white details, to make sure the house doesn’t appear dark.

“There is tons of natural light given that the windows are all around the two floors as well as the skylights on the ceiling,” he said.

The kitchen, bathrooms and utility room all have white trim and charcoal gray cabinetry. Goodman says he chose to deliberately add light to the space.

Goodman said there was nothing wrong with living in an entirely dark house, adding that it was excellent for a good night’s sleep.
